Summer Workout Tips

Marketplace at Fells Point Blog, Baltimore, MD Exercising in the heat of the summer can feel draining and unproductive, but you can have a successful workout if you try these tips!

Summer can get warm and muggy here in Baltimore, MD — not exactly the ideal conditions for getting outside, stretching your limbs, and working up a sweat in a vigorous workout. Thankfully, though, Marketplace at Fells Point has got your back! Not only do we have an on-site fitness center for you to take advantage of all year long just steps from your apartment, but today we also have tips for how you can make the most of your summer workout, whether you’re inside or outside.

Spiff up your wardrobe.

Dressing for the occasion is important in many aspects of life, and it’s especially so with working out! Dress appropriately for the conditions. Make a point to find fitted (not too tight that it doesn’t allow your body to move or breathe easily, but not too loose that it’s clunky and uncomfortable) clothing in lighter colors that reflect the rays of the sun. Opt for cotton over polyester fabrics to help wick away the sweat. And don’t forget to wear sunscreen, whether you’re inside or outside!

Refuel properly.

Staying hydrated regulates your body temperature and keep you energized, so have a water bottle handy so you can drink often. But also be aware of what foods you need to eat post workout to stay healthy. Active.com points out that higher temperatures mean more sweat and major electrolyte loss. Supplement your water intake with foods that make up for sodium loss. Choose healthy sources without added sugars to keep the energy high.

Adjust your expectations.

Conditions may drastically affect your performance, and that’s ok! In fact, expect it. Encourage positive associations with your efforts by realizing that working out outside saps your energy, but you can adjust so what you do really counts. This leads to a productive, healthy, and fulfilling workout because it lets you embrace your abilities as they are and challenge yourself appropriately, instead of denying reality and overworking yourself.
